Last October I was asked to participate in a panel discussion at Medientage in München. Although Medientage is focused on the German media market, I was asked to address the over the top video market (OTT) in the US. In the US market, service provider based OTT video is often called TV Everywhere. A good example of TV Everywhere is Comcast’s offering called Xfinity Streampix.
My presentation focused on OTT video and the challenges in finding commercial success. Specifically, I addressed the pressures facing North American service providers and the early successes of OTT video services like Netflix.
As we see it, there are four durable trends facing service providers as they think about an OTT offense and defense. These durable trends are not the only factors service providers grapple with, but we believe they are key to developing a successful OTT strategy and product roadmap. The for trends are:
